This poem appeared in the Halifax Herald on Tuesday February 23, 1892 (page 3), only three and a half months before Fenerty's death. This was his very last poem. The poem is in memoriam of Admiral Sir Provo William Parry Wallis (1791 - 1892). Sir Provo Wallis was born in Halifax, NS. He entered the Royal Navy in 1804 and served for almost 80 years. In 1812 Wallis was a Second Lieutenant on the HMS Shannon, and participated in the sea battle with the American ship Chesapeake in 1813. Upon the loss of his Captain in battle he took command of the fleet and led his crew into victory over the battle at sea.

The death of Sir Provo Wallis appeared in the Halifax Herald on Wednesday February 17, 1892. Charles Fenerty would have read that front page article, then spending the next couple days writing his last poem. The first two stanzas of the poem shout for the erection of a monument to commemorate Sir Provo Wallis. It then ends with Wallis as a Canadian hero and apart of our heritage - someone we must not forget.
